In a medium-sized city in the European Continuity Alliance, an ordinary Monday begins.

Trams are running. Bakeries are opening. Delivery vehicles bring goods into the city center. People stand on platforms, looking at their displays. Children are on their way to school.

In a café, two colleagues discuss why their favorite team lost over the weekend.

A small municipal drone hovers above an intersection for a few seconds. It checks a traffic sensor. Then it moves on.

Nobody looks up.

Why would they?

THE WORLD DID NOT COLLAPSE.

People in the Free Territories sometimes have a mocking name for ECA residents.

GRID PEOPLE.

People whose whole lives depend on networks working.

A door knows their authorization. A train knows their ticket. A vehicle knows its route. A pharmacy knows their prescription. A building knows its residents.

For many people inside the ECA, this infrastructure is simply everyday life.

To some people in the Free Territories, it looks comfortable. Efficient. Safe. And dependent.

ECA citizens sometimes have another word for people living outside those structures.

OFF-GRIDDERS.

Unpredictable. Poorly regulated. Sometimes dangerous.

Inside the ECA, there is more security. In the Free Territories, there is often less digital control. But when infrastructure fails there, someone does not automatically arrive to repair it.

Freedom and security have a more immediate relationship.

There are reasonable explanations. Old machines. Automatic emergency systems. Animals. Misinterpretations. Technical faults.

Nobody in the room pays much attention.

The next morning, the flight restrictions are expanded. The following day, communications fail in several Northern Freeholds.

Helix calls it a technical fault. The CSC disagrees.

Then a video appears. Blurred. Recorded at night. Several lights move above a forest.

No visible navigation lights. No transponders. No recognizable flight profiles.
